Goal: To recognize and come up with ideas for different image types.

Below is a list of different image types. Study what type of images you can find on for example YLE News. One image can fit several image type categories.

Can you find an example of every type of image? What is the most common image type?

A news photograph conveys factual information about a current topic, event or person.
A portrait conveys something about the life or personality of the photographed person. A portrait does not necessarily make news.
A reportage photograph is part of a bigger body of work, which tells the story of an event, phenomenon or person.
An illustration is a picture that illustrates, complements or highlights the text. An illustration can also be a narrative image without any accompanying text.

In a small group, choose an interesting news story and discuss how you would photograph it.
Think of three different pictures for the news story: a news image, a portrait and an illustration.
Share the news story and your ideas for the images with the entire group.
