What is “Impacting Image”?
Impacting Image is an online learning material for photography and photographic culture. It contains teacher-led exercises, that are aimed at primary education for pupils in grades 7-9, as well as for students in upper secondary schools and vocational schools. The materials are primarily designed to be used with the guidance of a teacher.
The website is created as a collaboration between the Finnish Museum of Photography, Photo North and VB Photographic Center in 2024-2025.
Website structure
Learning materials
The website contains multiple learning materials that are split into themes and types of exercises. You can browse all the exercises at once by choosing Learning materials from the menu on the left.
Themes
The material is split into five different themes. You can see the exercises for the individual themes by choosing the selected theme either from the menu on the left or from the top of the Learning materials -page.
The theme Algorithms introduces the rules that guide internet platforms and reflects over how context affects the interpretation of images. In the theme Digital Empathy we practice observation, the interpretation of images and interaction. The theme Ethics teaches us about rules regarding taking and publishing pictures. In the theme Effects we practice observing and use different methods to build a photograph. The exercises in the theme Truthfulness reflect over the information images produce and learn about picture editing.
Types of exercises
On the webpage you can find five different types of exercises, and each has its own symbol: conversation exercises (speech bubble), photo exercises (camera), reflective exercises (light bulb), group exercises (three characters) and quizzes (trophy). You can browse according to the type of exercise by choosing the type either from the top of the Learning materials -page or by clicking the type mentioned in the task card.
Exercises
Each task card contains information about the estimated time and tools required for the task, as well as the goals and links to transversal competences in the Finnish national core curriculum. Longer tasks contain subheadings to clarify the structure. Most of the tasks also include check boxes that can be used, for example, to tailor the task or to monitor the progress of the work.
Transversal competences
In order to save space, only the broad learning objectives of the national core curriculum for basic education are listed on the task cards. However, similar themes can also be found in the upper secondary school curriculum criteria (transversal competences) and in the vocational education and training qualification criteria (key competences for lifelong learning).
The aims set for transversal competences:
L1 – Thinking and learning to learn
L2 – Cultural competence, interaction and self-expression
L3 – Taking care of oneself and managing daily life
L4 – Multiliteracy
L5 – ICT competence
L6 – Working life competence and entrepreneurship
L7 – Participation, involvement and building a sustainable future
